Kyle Wyman Racing from Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course |
BATAVIA, NY - (July 12, 2011)
Kyle Wyman went double-duty at Mid-Ohio this past weekend for Round 6 of the AMA Pro Road Racing series riding not only for his familiar team on the RMR/Bruce Rossmeyer Daytona Racing XR1200 but also with a new team – Witchkraft Racing – in the AMA Pro Daytona Sportbike Series. Kyle scored his second podium of the year with a 3rd place finish in the barn-burner of an XR1200 final and 9th/11th finishes in Daytona Sportbike with the new team.
After 10 months without throwing a leg over a 600cc motorcycle, Kyle was graced with the opportunity to ride on the Witchkraft Racing/Sportbiketrackgear.com Yamaha YZF-R6 with another shot at the incredibly competitive field of Daytona Sportbike.
In race one the New Yorker was cursed with an uncharacteristically bad start from the 17th spot on the grid, falling to 22nd place on the opening lap but eventually working his way through the field to earn 9th place and his fourth career top-10 finish in the class.
“I just never gave up,” said Kyle, “I knew I had a wicked fast Yamaha underneath me, so I just put my head down and made the best of what was probably my worst start of the year. I felt so comfortable on the bike and was able to make passes quite easily. It wasn’t my best finish in the class, but definitely was my hardest earned result.”
Kyle continuously made progress throughout the weekend despite the challenge of an unfamiliar bike and crew, but could not better his finishing position in race two after battling with grip issues.
“Race two just didn’t go my way – I’m not quite sure what it was, but I expended a lot of energy in the XR1200 race just before. We didn’t make any changes from race one to race two, but the rear tire seemed to go off much earlier in the race and I kind of hit a wall with ten laps to go. From there I just put it on cruise control, tried not do anything too silly and brought home an 11th place.”
In the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 series, Kyle was fast right off the truck putting his Harley on the top of the time sheets for the first practice on Saturday morning. In qualifying, he matched his best starting position of 4th to put him on the front row of the grid. Kyle was in a race-long heated battle with fellow competitors Michael Beck and Steve Rapp for second place, and earned his second career AMA podium with a dramatic last-lap last-corner pass on the outside of Rapp.
“I made a move on [Beck] going into Turn 1 on the last lap--it was a tight, close one, but I got through,” Wyman said. “Then going into the Keyhole, Steve made a mistake right in front of me and I had to check up, and both guys got back past me. I just pushed as hard as I could through the second segment, which is the hardest place to pass. I knew if there was going to be a chance it would have to be coming up in Thunder Valley. I didn’t have the greatest drive, but I tried to get a run out into the inside of the Carousel, but I got out of shape and had to check up again. Then Steve made another mistake and I was able to get a run around the outside of the last corner [and get by him] by maybe six inches or so.”
After somewhat of a drought in performance, Kyle’s podium result in 3rd marks his second best finish of the season after winning the inaugural XR1200 race at Daytona International Speedway in March.
"To be back on the podium, where I feel I belong, is huge for my confidence," Wyman said. "I hope we can just continue to build on this in the coming events."
